Imagine if the dungeon complex beneath Darkwood Forest linked up with the Dark Elf city of Tiranduil Kelthas or if Yaztromo accompanied you, or stuff like that. (I guess at least Littlebig broke the Curse of Mungo!)

And you're right - Ghost Road is pleasantly good! :-)

Stuart: "If there's one thing that almost thirty years of Fighting Fantasy has taught us, it's that impossible situations are not fun."

Well said! Zhu said something similar on his blog review of DestinyQuest:

"Now, if Gamebooks were D&D, I can imagine the grognard-o-sphere scoffing about the kids today, their sense of entitlement to win, and their inability to deal with loosing, having to have everything handed to them on a plate, being molly-coddled. Not only that, but (bear in mind I'm still playing through chapter 1) the narrative drive is essentially about levelling up, getting better equipment, and creating ever more powerful character builds. Promoting munchkinism and min-maxing over flawed characters? blashphemy! But this isn't D&D, and there aren't any gamebook aficionados who'd seriously argue that Ian Livingstone's random insta-death, impossibly hard monsters, and start again from the very beginning because you didn't find the right keys, gems or body parts at the very last encounter is actually a better way of writing gamebooks, but then Ian does have an OBE."

From here:

http://realmofzhu.blogspot.com/2011/04/destiny-quest-1-shadow-legion.html

cheers

Andyfantasygamebookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05240994072742026340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632553067921785708.post-79803206444521287652011-04-02T13:00:16.470-07:002011-04-02T13:00:16.470-07:00The evil wizard can be defeated fairly easily. It's the Gigantus and Doppleganger that are just plain unfair (though they're not quite Razaak level impossible).Kierannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632553067921785708.post-13616133018494351532011-04-02T09:12:56.398-07:002011-04-02T09:12:56.398-07:00I seem to remember that there are a few hefty skil...I seem to remember that there are a few hefty skill penalties and tough monsters to fight. There's a fair amount of routes through the dungeon and they link back together in less than obvious ways. And there's not a huge list of items you absolutely have to get (in fact I think you only need 2), just many that are helpful. For an Ian Livingstone dungeon adventure, it's pretty replayable.

There's a lot of silly stuff like merchants living in dungeons etc. but personally I think this is a bit of an old school charm. The same is true of Warlock of Firetop Mountain after all. Although I will admit "old school charm" probably doesn't best display 15 years experience in the videogame industry.

Adventures of Goldhawk was a bit of a lazy cash in for the first three books, but Ghost Road is probably the most playable book Ian ever wrote.Kierannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632553067921785708.post-88702647799007156392011-03-29T01:07:08.171-07:002011-03-29T01:07:08.171-07:00I dunno Coop, it doesn't read like a particula...I dunno Coop, it doesn't read like a particularly good parody, more like a rather derivative and unimaginative attempt at cashing in (much like the Adventures of Goldhawk series he did), without comprehending what made Deathtrap Dungeon, among others, so popular in the first place.

With parody you'd expect a wink from the text from time to time, and I don't think you get that with Eye of the Dragon.

cheers

Andyfantasygamebookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05240994072742026340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632553067921785708.post-72286416353663639152011-03-28T04:44:44.255-07:002011-03-28T04:44:44.255-07:00Truth be told, I have a nagging suspicion that Eye...Truth be told, I have a nagging suspicion that Eye of the Dragon is one big slice of deliberate self-parody.Coopdevilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16219253658967958289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1632553067921785708.post-476115822087128362011-03-27T21:56:13.133-07:002011-03-27T21:56:13.133-07:00A case of "Do as I say, not as I do"...A case of "Do as I say, not as I do"...Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14346089919168447932noreply@blogger.com
