The ASSASSIN is a treacherous foe, a hired killer whose only purpose is to slay those they have been paid to murder. Some of them work for secretive cults and sects while others simply go freelance for wherever the contracts are most valuable. All encountered Assassins can be assumed to be dangerous, for they may soon as attack Heroes for simple sport, or have been actively recruited to terminate them!Assassins are the ultimate misanthropic individual loners, rarely congregating in groups unless there is business to be discussed. They are thus highly variable; roll on or choose from the following tables to establish the provenance of any encountered Assassin:
Type of Assassin:
Hornet Assassin: These weird insectoid killers were particularly favoured in the southern lands, such as Arantis or Kallemehr, where some cells found employment by the dread lord Bythos of the Abyss. For more information, see Beyond the Pit (p. 70).
Dark Elf Assassin: Renegade Dark Elves have been known to head to the surface of Titan and advertise as killers for any that require their legendary skills of subterfuge and dark sorcery. The one worrying element is the thought that their exile is all but a sham, and they are still faithful servants of the demonic city of Tiranduil Kelthas or its regional equivalent.
Ninja: The Ninja is night's true black agent, an individual who practices both stealth and lethality until they each become an art form. Ninjas tend to be best known from eastern provinces such as Fang and Kay-Pong, as well more exotic locales including Shabak, the city-states of the Glimmering Sea, Hachiman and even the distant Islands of the Dawn.
Man-Orc Assassin: Man-Orcs regularly hire out their services to the highest bidder, and the best tend to be found in war-like lands such as Brice or Ashkyos where there is always a constant demand for their particular 'talents'.
Brother of the Knife: This killer is a member of the the Brotherhood of the Knife, Port Blacksand's nefarious assassin's guild, ruled with ruthless determination by a group of nameless overlords known only by the number, i.e. Brother Number Three.
Freelance: Perhaps unsurprisingly freelancers form the majority of assassins; desperate people given to committing desperate crimes. They are also the most variable and number such infamous rascals like Vangorn the Murderer, a sociopathic killer from Khare, and Baraban of Port Blacksand, who prefers the art of the duel.
Grey Assassin: These are a lesser brotherhood of assassins attached to the Cult of the Night Dragon, that operates furtively in north-western Allansia and the Dragon Reaches. Promising operatives are recruited upwards to join the Black Assassins (see below).
Pirate Assassin: Given their ubiquity across the twelve seas and five oceans of Titan it should seem obvious that even pirates dabble with contract-killings while on shore-leave at some sordid cityport or another. In recent times the most famous was the Anchor Man of the Port of Crabs, who used an anchor as a morning star with which to dispatch his victims, but certainly other types of pirate-assassins are known too.
Scorpion Guild: This is an elite organization of assassins from across north-western Allansia, drawing skilled members from a wide variety of previous martial occupations. Rumoured to be funded by Lord Azurr, as an opposition to the Brotherhood of the Knife, Assassins who bear the Scorpion Pendant that designates membership include Blackthorn of Chalice, Dax the Axe and Garanka Vassell, among many others.
Black Assassin: These are the greater brotherhood of assassins attached to the Cult of the Night Dragon, that operates furtively in north-western Allansia and the Dragon Reaches. Promising operatives are recruited upwards from the Grey Assassins (see above) to join the Black Assassins.
Jai-Hulud Sorcerer-Assassin: The Jai-Hulud is a mystical killer from the Old World, likely a weird cult member from the Forbidden Fortress of Brice. They tend to use a combination of weapon skills and sorcery to achieve their despicable aims, which usually involve sowing chaos and discord in otherwise placid and peaceful locales.
