Fane of the Monkey God (The Maze of Pnar, part III)

Fane of the Monkey God (#31/31; #90/365)

"This long dark pillared hall appears to be an ancient temple of some kind. At the far end is a raised dais, on which is the stone statue of a monkey-headed god with jewelled eyes. On either side of the statue, two hulking rotting apes in bandages turn at your approach, and lean over to pick up large chunks of rubble."

Contents: This is a shrine to P'Thekwa, the Djaratian Monkey God. The two guardians are MUMMIFIED GREAT APES that will hurl rubble and rocks (damage as Improvised weapons) at the Heroes until they close for combat.

If the Heroes inadvertently summoned the MUNGIES from room #30(365), they will be here too, and everything they stole will be laid as offerings before the statue. If a Hero places the agate Monkey God fetish from #30 here as an offering, then the mummified apes will cease to attack, the Mungies will disappear in a cloud of yellow smoke, and the Heroes are free to retrieve any lost possessions.

The two jewelled eyes are large Emeralds worth 50GP each. Stealing them, or re-taking the agate fetish invokes the Curse of the Monkey God: anyone so cursed loses 1GP a day, or 1 Provision a day, or 1 LUCK point a day in that order. If their LUCK reaches zero they die in a horrible and inexplicable accident. The curse can be removed by a pilgrimage to the lost city of the Monkey God, somewhere in the Arantian highlands.

Stats:

2 MUMMIFIED GREAT APES, each SKILL 9, STAMINA 13, Attacks: 2, Large Claws, No Armour, +2 to Damage Roll. The undead Great Apes are immune to all attacks, and will reanimate 20 minutes after being 'slain'. They can only be permanently killed by fire or magical weapons or spells.
